Professor Jordan Sand (Georgetown University) examines the renowned Ise shrines, commonly regarded as the spiritual centre of Japan and ancestral sanctuary of the imperial family. Rather than viewing them as unchanging expressions of Japanese culture, this lecture situates them as nodes in regional circulations of goods and architectural forms extending to the Asian continent, with deep ties to Japan's imperial expansion in the modern period. The talk takes place at the Natural History Museum of the University of Zurich.
