Alessandro Cassia analyses the tension between urban densification and building preservation in Zürich. Whilst densification is meant to promote sustainability, demolition and new construction produce embodied carbon that retaining existing buildings does not. The lecture explores how these factors are weighed and what environmental and social consequences the choice to build anew entails.
